1.0 out of 5 stars No different, September 29, 2011
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sid Meier's Civilization V Game of the Year (DVD-ROM)
Same game in a new wrapper! By what stanard this game became a game of the year is beyond me. It has all the failings of Civ5 (see various reviews on the game), you still have to go through steam to play the game, something that is not advertised. This is a basic game if it is anything. It was not developed by Sid Meier's despite it having his name on it. They have so simplified things that the game is boring beyond belief, that is if you can even get it to run without crashing. The wonders are a wonder why you would even build them, they offer little extra for the expense and time. Having more cities (a larger empire) is counter productive. The smaller your empire the betterr for some of the more useful wonders such as the national bank which appears early in the game (???) but even still building it seems all but impossible since you have to have markets in each of your cities and even if you do it will tell you you dont. Yea a glich that has never been worked on becuase... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Fun to play for the first 200 turns, then CRASH!, October 12, 2011

= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars

I've had Civ V almost since it came out. I didn't even read the reviews for it until I realized that I could not get past turn 200.

THAT'S RIGHT! On turn 200, Civ V crashes, EVERYTIME. No matter what settings I use, no matter what system I use (Desktop or Laptop), no option. If I don't win the game by turn 200, it's over.

This basically means that I am limited to only playing maps that are small and fast, but if I get into a war of attrition with the computer because, for example, they're on another continent, then it's over, because there's almost no way that I will be able to finish by turn 200.

But it's worse than that, because it's not exactly turn 200, sometimes it's turn 187 or turn 213. So I find myself gritting my teeth around turn 200 wondering which turn is going to crash Civ V. So far no updates have taken care of this, no downloads, nothing.

This 'Game of the Year' edition is nothing but the corporations way of repackaging... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The Series goes in a New Direction, January 1, 2012

Most important is that I have played this edition to close to 300 moves, and I have had not one problem with crashing, even when using a "large" world size. In several weeks, it has just "froze up" once, but I was able to recover completely by saving and reloading. On Windows 7, I have seen fewer problems than Civilization IV on Windows Vista.

I have played six versions of "Civilization" (II, III, III Paths of Glory, Alpha Centauri,IV, and V and each one has been an improvement over the previous in some way. Civ V is not a linear progression from III and IV, in that it seems to go back to its basics, somewhere between II and III, and take a different turn from the religious / corporate strategies we found in IV. Those themes have completely disappeared, to be replaced by a heavier emphasis on the military and the diplomatic.

The biggest change for the military is the change from a square to a hexagonal grid, so familiar to all of us who cut our teeth on Avalon... Read more
